Imran Tilde: I make a living by being myself

“I make a living by being myself” which is the dream if you ask us. And much of him being himself involves design and art.

Actively seeking inspiration from various sources, Imran finds creativity in the most unexpected and random things. He often says, “Everything is inspiring, and everything is inspired”. Hinting at the never ending cycle of creativity where there is no beginning or end to inspiration.

His creative process involves relaxation and contemplation of his projects. He ponders on the concept, brainstorms solutions to any foreseen challenges and most importantly, focuses on making it visually appealing – something that is significant to him.

When he’s not art-ing away, he enjoys watching TV shows, swimming and playing tennis. He also recently started playing video games which he loves!

As an artist, there are many challenges to overcome. For Imran, it usually involves dealing with artist block, imposter syndrome, doubt and the like. He, however, believes that these are integral to the creative process.

Imran is passionate about a number of topics which include climate change. He argues that: even if one paper straw won’t single-handedly save the world (though it certainly plays a part), why embrace waste? Recycling, reusing, and reducing is cool.

Stopping unnecessary waste is important to him especially as his art unfolds in a world where Earth is no longer habitable, spotlighting a Northern Nigerian community adapting to the situation on a new planet, all while preserving their rich culture.

Regarding personal evolution, the Afro-futuristic enthusiast approaches it day by day. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledges the progress he has made, yet recognizes there is still a considerable distance ahead. The process of evolution is ongoing – a constant journey.

Talking about the future, he unveils his plans for a furniture company, Imran Tilde Designs, where he will be focusing on detachable pieces. He shares, “I’m proud of what’s in the works and already envisioning expansion plans with a supportive investor and friend. The future looks promising!”

Some exhibitions he has partaken in are ‘Experimentals’ 2023: an open studio exhibition in Kaduna, ‘Echoes’ 2023: A group exhibition at Orisun Gallery, Abuja and ‘Exile’ 2022: A solo exhibition at Fasaha Gallery, Kaduna.
